SEARCH ENGINES AND WEB DIRECTORIES

"Search engine" is the term generally used to mean a site where you can look for something on the Internet.

There are types of search sites which use very different methods to determine how to list and categorise a Web site.

Directories - like Yahoo! and the LookSmart group which provides results for MSN, Excite and AltaVista use people to evaluate sites submitted to their directory, and have control over whether a site is acceptable, and under which category it is listed.

Actual Search engines like Google and Alta Vista use automated programs which evaluate sites for listings. These usually scan your Web pages, page content and metatags to determine where to list your site. So getting listed on search engines and directories requires using different strategies.

Major search sites

Google Yahoo!   MSN Infoseek AltaVista

HotBot Lycos AOL   Open Directory

Initial submission

It takes four to eight weeks for most search engines or directories to list you – so plan ahead if possible, if you want to meet a targeted date or season.

The only way to speed this process and stand a better chance of being included in these listings is to use paid submissions  - Yahoo! and LookSmart offer express listing services for a fee..

Be persistent. Free submitted sites don't always get listed. If this happens, optimize your site and try again -  your persistence should work eventually.

In directories like Yahoo! and LookSmart, real people are reviewing your site, so make sure it’s easy to use, interesting, attractive and informative. If it fails in one or more of these areas – it could still get rejected.

Subsequent submission

Okay, you’ve got your site listed with the major search engines, but to stay high in their listings, you need to monitor and resubmit your site if it starts to drop out of site.
